'Elements of Drawing: from practice to Theory' is
an initiative of the Drawing Studio of the Faculty of Art & Design, Monash
University. The one-day symposium will provide a common ground and shared objective
for the participating art schools, Monash University, RMIT and the VCA, with
the aim of developing a cross-institutional platform for discussing the purpose,
means and results of teaching drawing in relation to contemporary art practice,
in an international context.
The conference will provide an open forum for the presentation of papers intended
to stimulate coordinated discussion of the current concerns of drawing; with
emphasis placed upon the pedagogic rationale. The starting point of practice
will be emphasized by a number of the papers focusing upon an exhibition in
the Fine Arts Building, Monash Caulfield. This will present a cross-section
of drawing research projects from the Faculty of Art & Design, Monash University;
School of Art, VCA; and the School of Art, RMIT; including a live project focusing
on collaborative drawing, lead by Research Fellow Geoffrey Dupree. This joint
exhibition will subsequently tour to the University of East London, in exchange
for a return exhibition, to be presented at the 2006 Monash Drawing Symposium.
