Full membership of ACUADS is open to senior executive staff of the academic units (faculty, school, department, institute or college) responsible for the teaching, research and management of university level visual art, craft and design courses where the central objective is the education of artists, craftspeople and designers. Participation is a matter for each university to resolve and may involve one or more memberships depending on organisational arrangements.

The Executive is elected at the Annual General Meeting by and from the members of the Council. The Executive meets regularly to identify and consider issues effecting art, craft and design education and research, to develop policy and to represent art and design schools within the university system at the level of state and federal government on behalf of ACUADS. The Executive promotes effective communication amongst its members.

Wider participation of university art and design school academics in seminars, conferences and other activities of the Council is actively encouraged. In this way, the Council fosters the development of the entire collegiate of art and design staff nationwide.

Institutions are able to take out membership through individual schools that fulfil ACUADS' eligibility requirements (fee to be determined by EFTSL) or to aggregate students (EFTSL) across schools and departments within the art and design discipline areas to determine the appropriate fee.

Institutions with more than 1,000 art and design students may take out two memberships; however, no institution may have more than two memberships.

Each membership has voting rights (one vote per membership).

Affiliate Membership
Affiliate membership is available to overseas organisations and institutions with aims and objectives similar to ACUADS.
